Post from the Past: Maho Beach on the island of San Martin is famous for the fact that many people go there not to swim, but to see the landing of planes. Photographer Thomas Prior traveled to the Caribbean to capture the chaos on this beach in the immediate vicinity of the international airport. It is hard to believe in the authenticity of the pictures of giant liners flying at an altitude of 10-20 meters above sunbathing tourists, nevertheless, they are real.

1) Princess Juliana International Airport serves Sint Martin, the Dutch side of the island of Saint Martin. It is the second busiest airport in the Eastern Caribbean. Therefore, beachgoers on Maho Beach have a hard time.

2) The beach is just an ideal place for a detailed examination of low-flying planes, although this causes some inconvenience when swimming and sunbathing.

3) It is more than difficult to shoot under such conditions, and the sand that rises like a cloud during landing is not the best "companion" for optics.

4) Despite the difficult conditions of takeoff and landing, not a single accident in this has yet been recorded.

5) Some beachgoers deliberately tickle their nerves, standing under the "belly" of landing airliners.

6) This is dangerous: the jet from the engine can injure or even kill. A poster at the entrance warns about this.

7) Airliners and small planes, when landing, fly so low that they seem to be about to hit, if not vacationers, then the umbrellas or the roof of one of the local bars.

8) Maho Beach is so popular with plane enthusiasts that local bars have airport flight schedules. And one of them even has a speaker that broadcasts conversations between pilots and controllers.

9) The owners of local drinking establishments are pretty good: the spectacular sight makes many tourists want to drink something stronger.

10) The hum when landing airliners is unimaginable, but it does not scare away tourists.

11) In a couple of minutes, carefree relaxation gives way to an atmosphere of chaos, and the beach is embraced by a real revelry of the elements.

12) The airport runway and takes only 2,180 meters. This length is barely enough to maneuver and the aircraft must fly at minimum altitude.

13) There is also an information board on the beach that details the flight times of the airliners.

Flight map Saint Martin

The smallest of all inhabited islands, Saint-Martin is part of the Antilles ridge. It owes its origin to an ancient volcano. Round in shape, washed by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, the island is surrounded by coral reefs and shallow lagoons. For 350 years Saint-Martin belongs to both France and Holland. Many Europeans have long appreciated the wonderful opportunities for recreation here.

Weather

Comfortable warm weather on the island throughout the year. It often rains in September and October. From February to May the air temperature is within + 30 ° С. Since the soils on the island are dry, it is mostly palms, hibiscus and cacti.

The beaches of Saint Martin

But the main wealth of these places are several dozen beaches with white sand and clear, clean water. Not far from them, vacationers can find bars and restaurants. In small cafes on the beaches you can taste national cuisine accompanied by the fiery lambada music, immersed in the atmosphere of joyful fun.

Attractions in Saint-Martin

Belonging to two different states does not in the least prevent tourists from exploring the interesting places of the island. France occupies the northern part, while Holland occupies the southern part.

Filisburg is the only city in the Netherlands. It is distinguished by the classic early colonial style. First of all, these are high tiled roofs, facades of houses, painted in bright colors. Places that reveal the history of the city will be interesting to visit.

  • Famous Museum Saint-Martin
  • Fort Willem
  • Watney Chamber Square.
  • Majestic monument dedicated to Queen Wilhelmina

Nature lovers will surely appreciate the beauty of the Botanical Gardens and the diverse animal world on display at the local zoo.

The capital of the French part of the island is Maringo. Republic Street is very popular for walking among city guests. The romantic atmosphere is created by small, charming buildings that house residential buildings, cafeterias and shops.

The outskirts of the city offer tourists to explore the old Creole village, an abandoned sugar plantation and the amazing Paradise Peak. From the walls of the ancient fortress Fort Louis opens beautiful view to Saint Martin and the seaside.

But the real gem of the island is the Butterfly Farm. These amazing creatures fly to the calm, pacifying music inside special lattice structures. Representatives of all continents, of different colors and sizes, whirling and fluttering around visitors, they amaze with their unsurpassed beauty.

Saint-Martin also offers a wide range of activities for active leisure. In the evening, restaurants open their doors, where you can continue to relax with the sounds of meringue or jazz. Caribbean temperament and French traditions are a great recipe for any kind of fatigue.
